Vietnam's coffee heritage dates to 1857, when it was introduced to the then French colony . By the turn of the twentieth century coffee production had grown substantially, particularly in Tonkin Province of French Indochina (Indocine [Fr.] and early production was primarily Arabica beans.

World War II, The war for independence against the French, and the war against the United States that followed the French defeat, did more than unify the country, it also devastated the coffee economy which was begun to be rebuilt in earnest with economic reforms instituted in the late 1980's. The new coffee culture was primarily Robusta coffee, which has been a great success with Vietnam now being the largest producer of Robusta coffee in the world.

Gillies Vietnam Robusta is a Grade #1, Wet Polished, Screen #16+ coffee. It is a well enjoyed specialty after traditional Vietnamese cuisine and is often found in traditional French style espresso blends. We recommend it in a standard roast (AGTRON 45-50) and a Dark roast (AGTRON 35-40).

The US Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements, prior to being used as a food ingredient for human consumption, that unroasted (green) coffee to be further processed, as roasted, to control hazards that may be found in the raw produce.
